The ThunderCast 2023/2024 Marshall Football Transfer Portal Tracker

Hate it, love it, or indifferent to it, the Transfer Portal is here to stay. Team rosters can drastically change year to year and players can hop to different teams for a chance at more playing time, competition against a different level, teams with a scheme that fits them better, to be closer to home, or even to a different school to meet their academic desires as crazy as that may sound. No matter the reason, we at The ThunderCast support the student athletes’ decisions no matter how badly we might have wanted them to stay, and will always consider them a Son of Marshall. With that being said, we have decided to enter the transfer portal with two years re. . .OOPS! We got carried away there.

We are tracking all the Transfer Portal news with this article and will update it regularly as things change. All players officially entering the portal will be tracked. When they go to another school or if they choose to come back to Marshall, we’ll update it here. Offers to potential incoming players will not be tracked, just incoming players that verbally commit to coming here. Even then, it is important to remember that players are not officially here until they enroll in school and attend past the university’s official “Add/Drop” day.

So let’s get tracking!

Transferred In, Then Out – Same Offseason

Yes, this is going to be a thing in today’s Transfer Portal climate; players are transferring to a team and then transferring to another team in the same offseason. Marshall has a couple of these and their entries from the Transfers In section above have been moved to this section with the outgoing transfer information.

Jason Harris, DE, Arizona

Harris is 6’7″, 265 lb Defensive End that is a grad transfer with two years of eligibility remaining. He was at Colorado in 2020, then at Arizona from 2021 to 2023. Was not on the roster for the 2023 season. Son of Sean Harris who played seven years in the NFL. Announced as officially signed by Marshall Football on 1/10, which is below.

Then transferred back out before the portal closed on 4/30:

Barrett Maddox, OL, Vanderbilt

Maddox is a 6’6″, 281 lb Offensive Lineman that had previously been recruited by Marshall before choosing Vanderbilt. He did not play in 2023 and was a redshirt. He will have four years to play. His commitment announcement on Twitter/X is below. Announced as officially signed by Marshall Football on 12/28. His Twitter/X post about transferring to Marshall no longer exists, and here is FarrellPortal’s tweet about him entering again before the 4/30 closing of the portal.

Will Norman, DL, Florida

Norman is a 6’4, 300 lb Defensive Lineman that played in four games at Florida in 2023 and then redshirted, so he has four years of eligibility remaining. He saw limited action in those four games, with 17 combined special teams plays. However, he also played eight snaps on defense against McNeese State and recorded an assisted tackle. Out of high school, Norman was considered the 23rd-ranked Defensive Lineman by 247 Sports and received 25 scholarship offers. Those offers came from some of the top programs in college football and included Auburn, Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M. Announced as officially signed by Marshall Football on 1/16.

He then re-entered the transfer portal on 4/23:

The above portal information is updated through 5/9. Check back for further updates throughout the offseason.

Excellent reporting! I am having a difficult time trying to keep up with the transfer portal. How do we stack up to other schools in the number of transfers? This seems like a lot to me.

Thanks for the comment, Jack. It is a lot, but just about every school is dealing with large numbers. Something to always consider is many players transferring out do not have many recordable stats and some are not on scholarship. So there is a lot of players across the nation desiring to go somewhere they can play and/or receive a scholarship. Sure, there are starters switching teams everywhere, but the majority are looking for playing time or to move to somewhere that best fits what they want out of their student athlete experience.
